Please take this as my personal feelings and not wanting an ounce of pity or sympathy, cause Lord knows, there are many others who do deserve our compassion and sympathy today.

When 9/11 happened and when I visited ground zero in Manhattan, it knock the wind right out of

my lungs and broke my heart bringing me to tears. Not only because I lost my innocence on feeling secure in my own homeland, but that I was born blocks away from that very site and that my birthday is 9/12. It is hard to feel like celebrating when the day before was a memory I will never forget as I watched with disbelief as the planes crashed into the towers and the horror that unfolded afterwards. I remembered having a hand over my mouth and the other over my heart. It hurt me to my very core.

Then this fall a late season hurricane did the unexpected and traveled up the east coast slamming into New Jersey, New York and Connecticut causing billions in damage. Luckily, I had to replace part of my roof and that was all, but many were so severely impacted by this storm named Sandy that they are still trying to recover from it and many are living in motels after losing mostly everything in their homes due to flooding. It was a very big shock to us all.

Then slightly over a month ago a madman decided to go to an elementary school and kill 26 precious human beings, taking them from our lives forever. This happened in my home state and once again, I had a hand over my mouth and the other over my heart as I heard the news. I didn’t know any one of them, but I wept for them and their families and keep them in my prayers hoping that they can find solace in the knowledge that other people share in their pain. I was grateful at the way our elected officials, from our President on down, showed the families and friends of the victims how we can all come together to help them in their time of horror and despair.

Now what we need is legislation that will stop events like this from happening. My partner in life tells me there is no way of stopping this because if the people can’t purchase them legally they will purchase them illegally and he is right. That no matter what laws are placed, like in prohibition, people will find a way. Even though these arms are meant to kill humans and not to be used to hunt animals, our second amendment right says we have the right. Now when those laws were written, people living in the prairie, were fighting off Indians and using them to hunt for food. Today, they are used for us to kill each other.

Now a few years back, I remembered watching a movie in which the only people allowed to bear arms were military, police and every form of law enforcement and government. It was a scary thought and a scary film. When you are unable to protect yourself and your loved ones against people who make their own rules as law, as in the movie, and you are unable to fight back without risking your life, things can go quickly awry.

Yes, I believe restricting the magazine clips for these assault guns should be a law. I believe guns with magazines should be abolished all together. Making it harder for a gun you have to load every 10 rounds will slow an assailant down. That is one law which may protect massacres from occurring, giving time for security to step in while the gunman has to reload. Armed school security (which must be part of the police force) should be part of today’s way of life. There have been too many of these occurrences and little done to prevent it. Plus, metal detectors should also be part of a school security to make sure anyone entering the building will be unable to sneak a weapon in. It sadly is the

world we live in today and we must accept and face this cruel fact.
